Charlottesville Steps Up!
Charlottesville, VA
April 14, 2007 01:00PM to 03:00PM
Event Description: If you're tired of feeling hopeless about global warming, Step Out with us on April 14 and learn how you can Step Up to join the hundreds of thousands around the country taking vital steps to fight it, right now.
We'll meet on the street side of the University of Virginia's Rotunda at 1:00 p.m. We'll hear from a wide array of qualified speakers, coming at the problem from a variety of different perspectives - U.Va. professors, scientists, architects, businessmen, environmental professionals, and concerned citizens. We'll be handing out information on practical things we can do *now* on an individual and community level to ensure a better future for people all over the world.
Afterwards we'll make our presence known to the wider community by walking downtown together for a final gathering on the Downtown Mall. We'll have some signs and posters available, but bring your own if you can; we're expecting a large turnout!
Come for the speakers, come for the walk, but mainly COME - it's your best chance to get all of Charlottesville in step with a sane human future.
Confirmed speakers include:
Chad Freckmann, Blue Ridge Clean Fuels
Cale Jaffe, Southern Environmental Law Center
Tom Jones, New Venture Directions

Location:
Meet at the U.Va. Rotunda where Rugby Road dead-ends into University Drive. (RAIN LOCATION is Maury Hall Auditorium, Rm 209 - Maury is off the west side of the south end of UVa's Lawn, near the stone amphitheater and next door to Minor Hall.) Walking downtown from there takes about 25 minutes for an average healthy person. For those who don't wish to walk, a free trolley runs from the University downtown every 15 minutes or so; it will also ferry us back to the University area after the walk downtown.
Directions:
From Interstate 64, take exit 118-B (the exit for Rte. 29 North.) This will
put you on the Rte. 29 Bypass.
Go past the first exit (Fontaine Ave).
TAKE the second exit (Ivy Road). Bear RIGHT onto Ivy Road at the end of the
ramp. You will be heading east into Charlottesville.
CONTINUE on Ivy THROUGH several lights (3 or so). When you cross Emmet St.,
Ivy changes name & becomes University Drive. You will see tennis courts, fields,
and red brick University buildings to your right.
GO THROUGH the next light, which is Rugby Road. You will immediately see the
Rotunda to your right.
--------PARKING------: on the street, if you're lucky, or in public garages. A
small garage is on Elliewood St., which crosses University Dr. a few blocks past
the Rotunda. For a bigger one, stay on University to the next light PAST the
Rotunda, which is 14th St. Turn left on 14th, proceed one short block to
Wertland St., and turn right. The entrance to the garage comes up quickly on
your right.
Parking is also available in the UVa guest garage on Emmet St. It is south of
Ivy/ University. If you are coming in from Interstate 64 and the 29 Bypass as
above, follow the directions above until, driving East on Ivy Rd., you reach
Emmet St. Instead of crossing Emmet, turn right. The guest garage will be on
your left after you pass a couple of well-marked pedestrian crosswalks. Park
and ask a passerby where the Rotunda is - it's very close by.

After we heard from speakers and took our pictures at the Rotunda, rally participants walked from UVa to Charlottesville's historic downtown. Here we are on the downtown mall.
