Step it Up! 2007 - Montpelier Rally
Montpelier, VT
April 14, 2007 01:00PM to 04:30PM
Event Description:Don't miss Montpelier's Step It Up event hosted by the Vermont Natural Resources Council, Association of Vermont Recyclers, National Wildlife Federation and the Vermont Public Interest Research Group.
The event will start at noon at Morse Farm - one of the state’s most notable destinations for maple syrup lovers and Nordic skiing aficionados. Arrive at noon for the opportunity to enjoy a maple cremee (free to the first 100 who sign a global warming petition!), a tour of the farm, mingle with your friends and learn about global warming from area organizations and leaders. At 1 p.m. hear from stakeholders directly affected by global warming, including Andrew Brewer, owner of Onion River Sports and Burr Morse, a seventh generation Vermonter who owns and operates the Morse Farm Maple Sugarworks and ski area. At 2:00 p.m. - accompanied by music by the Junkman - the group will march down to the State House lawn where we will call on state and federal policy makers to Step It Up! On the steps of the Capital, we will call on our elected officials to make a commitment to cut carbon emissions by 80 percent by 2050. U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders and Vermont Senate President Peter Shumlin will join us.
Don't miss this opportunity to be part of an historical event - the largest demonstration on global warming to date in the United States. Please wear green and encourage your friends and neighbors to come!
NOTES:
- WE'RE ENCOURAGING CARPOOLING, PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION, AND ALTERNATIVE TRANSPORTATION TO GET TO THE EVENT (I.E. RIDING A BIKE!). To help, we've organized a Green Mountain Transportation Authority shuttle service - free - from Montpelier High School to Morse Farm starting at 11:45 and running periodically throughout the day. Park your car at the high school and hop on the bus! Also, people can leave their cars at Morse Farm to walk down to the State House; shuttles will be available to take people back to Morse Farm around 3:30 or 4:00.
- Participants are highly encouraged to build/bring their own "junk instrument" and something to strike it with. Grab a coffee can from your recycling bin or an old hubcap from your garage! Or, create a banner or sign and join in on the Step it Up March chants!
- Join the Youth Turnout! Central Vermont Youth (and teachers) are encouraged to contact Krista Harness, AVR's Youth Environmental Coalition Coordinator, to get in on the plans for the youth involvement in Step it Up. (yec@vtrecyclers.org or 454-8400)
