Our Step It UP rally was located at the Bridgewater/Hebron dump and recycling center. These two rural towns combined have a total population of 1,500. We displayed our banner, talked to folks entering and exiting the dump, and gave out CFL light bulbs in exchange for incandescents. The CFLs were donated by a local hardware store (Rand's) and Walmart.
We distributed about 60 CFLs along with educational literature about them supplied by our local power company.
People who received the bulbs were appreciative and supported our Step It UP action. We had a great time.
We don't have access to the local weekly newspaper online. Here's what they wrote:
Step It UP Rally
On Saturday, April 14, from 12-2 PM, The National Day of Climate Action, there will be a rally and CFL light bulb exchange at the Hebron/Bridgewater transfer station to urge Congress to cut carbon emissions by 80% by 2050.
You can receive a free Compact Fluourescent Light bulb in exchange for one of your incandescents. These 20-watt bulbs (equivalent to a 75-watt incandescent) use 1/4 the energy of a regular light bulb and lower the cost of your electric bill.
The Step It UP rally and CFL Lightbulb Exchange is one of over 1,100 citizen "actions" taking place in all 50 states on April 14th to let our representatives know that we want them to act now to curb global warming. We passed the Climate Change Resolution at town meeting. Now we can let them know we mean it again.
The Hebron/Bridgewater CFL Lightbulb Exchange is organized by the New Found Energy Group, a team of Newfound-area citizens working to reduce carbon emissions in their homes and in the community. The event is sponsored by The Mill, Rand's Hardware, and Walmart.
