We marched along the Seattle waterfront from Pioneer Square to Myrtle Edwards Park past all the things we love - the Pike Place Farmer's Market, the salmon offshore, the mountains and glaciers across Puget Sound.

The march departed Occidental Park. The sun shone upon us. The children carry our message in the lead - Step It Up Congress! Cut Carbon 80% by 2050!

It's Seattle, so it had to rain on at least some of our march. But we were undaunted!

Here in Salmon Nation, our iconic fish are always on our minds. They integrate our lives. If they fail, we fail. But we're not going to let them! Step It Up, Congress! Cut Carbon 80% by 2050!

Close to 1000 marchers braved the rain to walk through the streets of Seattle, chanting and carrying signs. Many more turned out once the sun emerged for the rally at a local park, where there were speeches by the Mayor and County Executive and others, as well as information booths by various groups. (I'm not the main organizer, but mostly sharing this to get some pics for the website).

Polar Bear Sited In Waters Off Myrtle Edwards Park Warns of Global Warming and Encourages Decrease of Carbon Emissions!

Seattle, WA, April 14, 2007 ? Between 3:00PM and 4:00PM a Polar Bear was sited in the waters off of Seattle?s Myrtle Edwards Park, near the Olympic Sculpture Park! Randolph Sill, a local Seattle artist, made an appearance as a polar bear (wearing a comfortable SCUBA ?dry suit? under his fluffy white Polar Bear costume). He is seeking to bring attention to global warming and encouraging congress to ?Step it Up?.

He is joining others across the country to raise awareness and to implore congress to ?step it up? by decreasing our domestic carbon emissions by 80% by 2050. More information about Step it Up is available on http://stepitup2007.org/.

Although it is not his primary consideration, Randolph wouldn?t mind bringing a little attention to the plight of the Polar Bear, too. Many in our country have been affected by watching Planet Earth on the Discovery Channel and seeing how the melting icecaps are affecting the polar bear. More information about that is available at www.Polarbearsos.org.

ABOUT RANDOLPH SILL ? Randolph Sill is a local ceramic artist and pottery teacher for youth and adults. His artwork can been seen at www.madpotter.com. Working with art and activism for over 30 years, he has been SCUBA diving since he was 15. This is his first time impersonating a polar bear.

A beautiful afternoon of sunshine before our walk down Alaska Way to the new Sculpture Park along Puget Sound. In the spirit of Seattle, we walked the miles along the waterfront in rain - soaking to the bone and arrive in the park with sunshine and warmth.

The Interfaith Cration Festival debuted our new banner, which had a few technical difficulties, oh well. Earth Ministry and the ICF had alerted many religious leaders about the march and climate solutions fair in Seattle. Earth Ministry counted 27 Churches, 11 Synagogues, and one Mosque represtented. It was an awesome crowd - colorful, spirited (pun intended), and joyful despite the rain.

Many people have felt overwhelmed by the increasingly apocalyptic reports emerging about the climate crisis. A resident of the Marshall Islands spoke with tears in her voice, about her fear that her country may vanish under the waves. The moral and spiritual core of this is key to success in turning this crisis around, to turning hearts around, and to stepping up the speed of our response!

This march was filled with a spirit of hope. Many who had grown to dread the spirit crushing nature of the news were beaming with joy. Thanks to Bill McKibben and the people who responded to the ripples he sent out!!

People of many faiths, and spiritual connection to our earth, from the Interfaith Creation Festival put a smile on our Blue Whale. We hope to see her in late May as we launch the festival and a year of action for care for all creation.
