In Livingston County Michigan, a small town community about 50 miles west of Detroit, we held our Step It Up event at the local recycling center on Saturday during their regular operating hours of 9 am - 1 pm. Recognizing an existing audience for our message, a group of 10 volunteers offered to check air pressure in the tires of those waiting in line to drop off their recycling and offered to fill up those tires that needed it. We also distributed about 200 flyers with 50 more ways to reduce our personal energy use and had 200 postcards signed addressed to our Congressman, Mike Rogers, asking him to support carbon reduction of 80% by 2050.
Our action was co-sponsored by All Saints Lutheran Church, Recycle Livingston and the Crossroads Group of the Sierra Club.
Although it was unseasonably cold, we had a great time, met some wonderful people and got our local press to come out and cover the story.
We are contacting our Congressman to set up an appointment to hand deliver the postcards we collected.
Our hats are off to those who had the vision to organize this nationwide effort. We are honored to participate with you all.
