The weather held out for Step It Up! Worcester on a momentous day. Over 800 people gathered at the historic Elm Park in Worcester, to join the national Step It Up! movement with a festive celebration and call to action. It was a landmark event for Worcester, giving community members, students, and citizen-activists hope for a real, local mobilization against extreme climate change.

The people of all ages who attended Step It Up! Worcester enjoyed a day of music, speakers, vegan food and convention-style tables, showcasing the broad network of businesses, organizations, and other groups concerned with sustainability issues, including local environmental and social justice groups, renewable energy providers, a veggie-oil co-op and diet-change advocates.

During the Step It Up! Worcester festival and concert, several dozen attendees signed up for the GreenUp Energy program, a green-energy option provided by National Grid. The funds provided by a matching-grant program will fund a manager for the City of Worcester's new Climate Action Plan.

Lt. Gov. Tim Murray, Mayor Konnie Lukes, Peggy Middaugh of the Regional Environmental Council of Central Massachusetts, Jennie Stevens, PhD, of Clark University and many others spoke at Step It Up! Worcester about extreme climate change and educating citizens on what they can do to reduce such harmful change. The event was kid-friendly, with face painting and craft tables run by local high school students. Food was be provided by the One Love Cafe, ARTichoke food co-op, El Basha, and Cat's vegan bakery. Special thanks to St. Spyridon's Church, right next to Elm Park, for making their facilities available in case of rain.

In coming weeks, Step It Up! Worcester organizers will announce additional events and activities designed to promote clean, sustainable energy locally in order to help reduce significantly extreme climate change globally, For more information on Step It Up!
