The “Greening Greenfield” committee and the Greenfield Solar Store hosted a total of 75 people, joining our voices in the call for cutting carbon.
We gathered at the Greenfield Solar Store for a presentation and discussion on 1001 Solutions to the climate crisis.
We expressed a wide range of motivations for action – from “for our grandchildren” to “stewarding the earth” and “environmental justice.”
And we discussed a wide range of actions –
- not only individual actions such as conservation, but also
- actions on the town level such as becoming an ICLEI City for Climate Protection,
- state policies such as building codes and renewable energy portfolios, &
- national policies, such as car mileage standards and banning incandescent bulbs

Our event exceeded all our expectations! Over 75 people came to send the message to Congress to cut carbon emissions by 80% by 2050. The group talked about why they are concerned about climate change and then they saw a PowerPoint presentation authored by Dan Lashoff of NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council) on climate change solutions ? how we can get from here to there. This was followed by a very lively discussion of personal and legislative action people can take that will make this plan become a reality. All three area newspapers carried substantive pre-event articles about our event, and the Greenfield Recorder sent a reporter to cover the event.
Our event was part of the recently launched ?Greening Greenfield? campaign, which is a collaborative project created by the Town of Greenfield and the citizen group, the Greenfield Energy Committee. The ultimate goal of the group is to develop and implement an energy and climate action plan for Greenfield.
We would like to thank Bill McKibben and the Step It Up organizers for their vision, and for carrying our message forward that we want our government to make a commitment to start reducing climate change emissions today, with the goal of reducing them by 80% over the next 43 years.
