We only posted our event yesterday afternoon, mind you. Our small community is very charming and set on the other side of the hill from a Conoco-Phillips refinery. The Al Zampa bridge crosses the picturesque Carquinez Straits where oil tankers pass underneath, bringing their contents to the various nearby refineries. It was here, on the pedestrian walk-way of this bridge, we stood with signs, in the pouring rain. Though we were small in number (5, including my 11 year old daughter) we made an impact as many passengers in cars did a double take at our signs. "Step it up Congress" and " National Day of Climate Action" etc... As we walked across the bridge - some cars and trucks honked in support. It was raining hard and at least they saw us! Later we met a the local deli/breakfast place for hot coffee. It turned out that another person was waiting for us there. We learned from Arya, who came all the way from Oakland to join us, that there is organizing afoot in our community to stop Conoco-Phillips from increasing their size by 30%. So now we plan to attend the farmer's market in town, distribute fliers about the public hearing on the refinery expansion - and we want to plan another time at the Al Zampa bridge to gather with folks from our community ....maybe a monthly "group action walk" Stay posted for expansion of the Crockett Action Committee...which is less than 24 hours old and already making an impact. Pictures will be posted tomorrow.
