Over 200 Portlanders, carrying masks and snorkels, swim goggles, and one surfboard, paraded this morning along what could someday be the new coastline of Portland. The parade ended in Monument Square in the center of the city, where we heard from our state legislators who are working to make Maine a part of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative. Other inspiring speakers included Reverend Winthrop and coastal geologist Peter Slovinsky.

Mainers donning snorkels, masks and more demonstrated their concern about the catastrophic effects of global warming at the New Coast Parade and Rally in Portland, Maine. Dubbed the "New Coast Parade," the event began with a march along Fore Street, once the natural coastline of Portland and would be "new coast" if sea levels rise 6 meters. The parade lead to Monument Square, where there were speakers (Maine's House Speaker kicked off the afternoon), music, and information kiosks offering information about global warming and alternatives. Co-sponsors included the Natural Resources Council of Maine, Maine Interfaith Power and Light and MENSK.

Beautiful weather made for great rally, attended by over 150 people of all ages, carrying placards and signs, gathered at Post Office Park, in the heart of Portland's Old Port, just blocks from the Casco Bay waterfront. The march proceeded down to Commercial Street, which runs adjacent to the waterfront and at only 4 feet above sea level could be potentially submerged as a consequence of Global Warming. The procession continued back up through downtown Portland to a final gathering at Monument Square where several hybrid cars and alternative means of transportation were on display as well as exhibits by environmental groups and alternative energy vendors. It was a great kick-off event for an important global movement.

The sun shone on a group of over 200 enthusiastic citizens of all ages today in Portland, who paraded through the downtown area with colorful signs, snorkels, masks, a surfboard, unicycles, and bicycles! The parade ended in Monument Square where we heard from state legislators, the DEP commissioner, a scientist, and minister. The group then viewed exhibits while being entertained by local musicians who sang about CFLs and habitats!
