Fifteen backcountry skiers (and two dogs) went up the unplowed Veterans Memorial Highway to the top of 4,867-foot Whiteface Mountain, one of the Adirondack High Peaks, and unfurled a banner calling on Congress to Step It UP! The 11-mile round-trip adventure was organized by the Adirondack Mountain Club and the Adirondack Explorer newsmagazine.
