Basically, the event was a huge success! We were expecting about 80 people to attend, and were thrilled to have 126 sign-in! Since we served a buffet lunch of locally grown veggies and meat dishes, we were a little concerned about running out of food. But it was a fishes and loaves experience, as there was enough food, but none left over.
The food was served on compostable tableware and the attendees were great about separating the recyclable items from the items to be composted. Youth from the church delivered the material in compostable bags to a school around the corner that has a compost pile.
The two presentations were very well received. The first was from Nicole Woodman, the Sustainability Manager for the City of Flagstaff, AZ. There was a great question and answer session for Nicole.
The other presentation was from David Spence, a renewable energy advocate, who had his photo taken during his presentation by the local newspaper. The photo appeared on page two of the local newspaper on Sunday (Arizona Daily Sun).
A mother and son performed Mike Delaney's song "Trash This Planet", that was listed on the Step It Up website. The entire group then sang a hymn which discussed being good stewards of the earth, and caring for creation.
The Community Supported Agriculture booth was well supported with many people signing up. A share of their program valued at $180 was donated to our cause, and auctioned off through a silent auction.
A couple other businesses set up booths too. One was named Architectural & Environmental Associates. They distributed a lot of information about solar and wind systems. They sold several books on green building techniques and at least one participant plans to have them install a solar system at their house. We are exploring the feasibility of a solar system at our church and are currently conducting an energy audit.
Another business that set up a display was named Quality Connections. They rebuild and refill laser ink cartridges while employing people with disabilities. They also gave away grocery tote bags.
The colorful banner was made by the Campus Climate Challenge group at Northern Arizona University. Check out the attached close-up photo of the banner which shows their logo and the logo of the Christians for the Earth group at Flagstaff Federated Community Church that co-hosted the event.
The Christians for the Earth group sold many CFL lightbulbs and Equal Exchange products. We also sold numerous different environmental bumper stickers with messages such as "Insatiable IS NOT Sustainable", and our very own group slogan "Mindful Choices for the Environment Are Spiritual Acts". Through a raffle, we gave away items such as canvas bags and plantable cards (flower seeds in the biodegradable paper).
It was great to see people from all walks of life gathered together for such an important cause. Many contacts were made to help us reach each other in the future.
