It was a beautiful sunny but blustery day at the Alamo in San Antonio. People arrived by bike, by foot, and by hybrid cars for our Step It Up Event in front of the Alamo. Tourists and sight-seers were drawn in by the crowds and many stayed to listen and learn. Local belly dancers from Karavan studio got the show started, followed by chants from the crowd: Step It Up! How much? 80! When do you want it? 2050!. After some trivia games to get the crowd really going (and to educate those who did not know the answers)we had a great line up of speakers. Heather DeGrella and James Andrews with the USGBC Central Texas Chapter kicked off the line-up, followed by a local renewable energy hero, 94 yeard old Bill Sinkin. Speakers from the Sierra Club, the City's Environmental Services Director Rose Ryan (who announced new measures being adopted by the City for Green Building and Compressed Natural Gas vehicles), and Anita Ledbetter with the MPE came next. The day was topped off with two incredibly enthusiastic talks, one by Bexar County Commissioner Tommy Adkisson and the keynote by TX State Representative Mike Villarreal. Everyone called upon leaders in Congress as well as local and State to Step It Up with their leadership and legislation.
A final trivia game which put contestants head-to-head to test their knowledge of efficiency on light bulbs resulted in one very happy contestant walking away with a beautiful PukLED light from Lucifer lighting. And finally we all posed with our banner and the Alamo behind us for our photo! It was a very successful day, with quite a few tables on the sidelines for signing petitions to support bills in Congress, State and Local City Government that help with carbon-reducing and for educational materials on carbon-offsetting.
Thank-you San Antonio for your support!
