Step It Up 2007 Climate Change Awareness Fair

Albion, MI

November 3, 2007 11:00AM to 01:00PM

Hosted by Lisa Anderson

Event Description:
Students and faculty of Albion College, along with community members and leaders of the City of Albion, will be hosting a global warming awareness event as part of The National Day of Climate Change Action. This event will be held November 3rd at Albion College’s Dow Center at the corner of Erie and Hannah Street before the football game from 11am to 1pm. Student organizations, community members and professors will be available to talk about different aspects of climate change. Senator Mark Schauer will be giving the opening address, which will be followed by a campus and community climate change awareness fair. There will also be live music, children's games, cider, and doughnuts. A closing will be given by Professor Timothy Lincoln, speaking on the status of Albion College’s sustainability efforts, which includes the official agreement to reaching carbon-neutrality as part of the Campus Climate Challenge. This scheduled event is part of the national movement Step It Up 2007, which is calling for more political attention to the already-occurring issue of climate change. The movement presents politicians with the three goals of the 1 Sky Initiative in order to cut fossil fuel emissions. They are: 1. Cut CO2 emissions 80% by the year 2050 and 30% by 2020. 2. Moratorium on new coal-fired power plants. 3. The formation of a green jobs corps, which would conserve 20% of our energy by 2015 and create 5 million green jobs. Students and community members of Albion will be presenting the Michigan and United States Congress with petitions calling for these priorities to be adapted into current legislation.
