Event Description:In conjunction with Step It Up 2007 on November 3rd, we explore what climate change means for farmers & our food in the Northeast. Free programs will take place throughout the day to educate & inspire action.
Keynote by Fred Kirschemann

We will welcome esteemed speaker Fred Kirschenmann, Distinguished Fellow at the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture at Iowa State University & Stone Barns’ Board President, for a keynote speech on the state of climate change in the world and its connection to natural & human systems.
Climate Change in Our Backyard: Local Farmers Weigh-in

How is climate change affecting small farmers in the Northeast? Join us as we delve into the untold stories of local farmers whose current climate change-related obstacles & resilient adaptations are shaping the local food system of the future. Participants on our panel include Mike Biltonen, farmer & pomologist from Stone Ridge Orchard, an orchard in Stone Ridge, NY with over 200 years of agricultural history, and owner of Blue Marble Farms, LLC; Ken Kleinpeter, currently the Director of Farm and Facilities at Glynwood Center in Cold Spring, NY, once a founding partner in the first integrated sheep dairy and cheese-making operation in the US and manager of the Old Chatham Sheepherding Company; Jack Algiere, Four-Season Grower at Stone Barns Center; and Julie Engel, Livestock Husband at Stone Barns Center. The panel will be moderated by Blue Hill at Stone Barns chef-owner Dan Barber.

Join Jack Algiere & Julie Engel for an on-the-ground farmer’s view of climate change as it is affecting our farm. Jack & Julie will guide you through Stone Barns’ pastures & gardens to talk about how climate change is altering the natural environment that both domestic plants & animals rely upon, as well as describe changes in how they farm, & what they farm.
Learn about the local effects of climate change on our food, get tools for action, and show your support for local farmers & changes in climate change policy.
