Greenpeace NYC presents: Where's Meeks?
Queens, NY
November 3, 2007 11:30AM to 03:00PM
Event Description:Greenpeace's version of Step It Up. Last spring we joined the sea of people event in Battery Park, you may remember us from our giant whale costumes. This year, we're hosting our very own Step It Up event.
Our purpose: put Representative Gregory Meeks of Queens District 6 in the hot seat and ask him why he has yet to sign onto the Safe Climate Act, a bill that demands an 80% reduction of CO2 emissions by 2050. Meeks is Democrat of the House that has yet to cosponsor this bill.
Our plan: We're hosting a Project Hotseat rally/community building event at Roy Wilkins Park in St. Albans, Queens. We are inviting school groups, community groups and businesses to come and personally ask Congressman Meeks to step up to the global warming challenge. We'll be having a march around the park, ending in the southeast section near the outdoor stage. We're bringing literature on global warming/climate change, Greenpeace petitions to sign in support of substantive climate change legislation, and trivia games. We want to generate dozens of letters to Congress, and we'll even be making origami "hotseats" to send to Gregory Meeks. You can also take your turn at being videotaped in the "hotseat" sending a message to Congress about your concerns with climate change. The time to sign onto strong global warming policies is now. It's about time our politicians listen to our demands.
We want as many people as possible, so come out and rally with Greenpeace! If you plan to come, send an email to
