Bike To Fight Global Warming
Vineyard Haven, MA
November 3, 2007 10:00PM to 11:00PM
Event Description:BIKE TO FIGHT GLOBAL WARMING
On November 3rd, 2007 -- one year before the election, Americans are rallying in their communities to halt global warming. The event is officially called Step It Up 2007, and Vineyarders are participating.
The Cycling Club of MV and MV Peace Council are organizing a “Bike to Fight Global Warming” event. Cyclists of all ages are meeting Saturday morning at Tisbury’s Lagoon Pond boat ramp, displaying signs and banners that express their desire for climate stability, and then leisurely riding to Ocean Park (in Oak Bluffs).
“This is not a bicycle race. But it is a race to see if we can preserve a livable world for our children” says event organizer Chris Fried. Experts now agree that we must immediately begin taking remedial steps. If we wait ten years, catastrophic climate and sea-level changes will likely occur.
Politicians are being told to embrace three “1 Sky” priorities. They are: an 80% reduction in carbon emissions by 2050, a Green Jobs Now program (to weatherize buildings and install renewable energy devices), and a moratorium on new coal-fired and nuclear power plants.
35% of the Vineyard’s CO2-release comes from motor vehicles. Bicycling can help reduce this. In addition, bicycling reduces traffic congestion and provides healthy exercise.
Participants are asked to be at the boat ramp at 10 am and wear helmets. For more information, go to
www.stepitup2007 or contact Chris at 508-693-7741. Rain date is Nov. 4th at 1 pm.
