break ground for community gardens
Springfield, OR
November 3, 2007 02:30PM to 05:30PM
Event Description:
I have spoken with Phil about this. There is already an event organized in Eugene at the University of Oregon. This is meant to be an axillary event, hopefully announced at the large demonstration at the EMU.
I exchanged emails with Phil on Wednesday and have been putting this together since then.
There is a garden called the Youth Farm in Springfield (next to Eugene). The address for this is 705 Flamingo Ave. They have community garden plots available to the public. The area where we will work has not been in use in years and needs major weed cleanup. We will also be able to plant a section of it with winter crops, and seeds for transplants for our Victory Garden project (formerly called the 10,000 New Gardens Project), using the spirit of gardens planted during World War II to "fight" climate change and of course raise food. The Victory Gardens involves teams of 5-6 people who go to each others houses to start gardens, with the help of a "master gardener." Here in Oregon we can grow year around.
We will go to the site tomorrow morning to take before videos and then hopefully people will come after the rally. They have lots of tools there, but rakes and shovels could also be brought to participants.
