We held an event on a very busy street on Firday, November 2, from 5 pm - 7 pm during rush hour, where we held up signs with the three Step it Up demands: reduce carbon 80% by 2050, create 5 million green jobs, no new coal powered facilities. Our group, both environmentalists and anti-war activists, also held up signs calling for an end to the war in Iraq, and making the connection between high usage of oil, wars for oil and global warming. One sign said: "Less oil = less war = less global warming." We stood on Lake Ave. at the 210 freeway, near a commuter train station, and estimated that 3,000 people saw our signs over the two hours period of the event. We will schedule a meeting with our Congressman, Adam Schiff, who has signed onto the Waxman Bill to cut carbon, and will ask for his leadership on the other two environmental issues. Some of the people in attendance included a person from the Rainforest Action Network - who we will try to partner with around their full schedule of events in the Pasadena/Los Angeles area in November. We also made contact with a City of Pasadena manager who came to the event and works on the city's Green City Action Plan. We will meet with this person to explore the issues that we can partner on. We considered the event a big success!
