A small but committed group met at the UU Church in Brevard to take
part in our "From the Heart, For the Mountains" Step It Up event. We
began with some good old mountain music (including sing-alongs)
performed by local talent. We then viewed several films about the
practice of Mountaintop Removal coal mining and its effects on the
land, culture, and people of Appalachia. Heartfelt discussion
followed, with ideas flowing about how we can change peoples' attitudes
about energy use, how to support the people of Appalachia, and how to
encourage Duke Power to halt its efforts at constructing new coal-fired
power plants. Attendees sipped on locally-produced hot cider, and the
Cliff & Mojo Bars (from the "Everything's Cool" folks), reviewed
climate change and coal information, and took away numerous handouts to
prepare them for further action. A small gathering, but as Margaret
Mead put it so nicely years ago, "Never doubt that a small group of
thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the
only thing that ever has." Yeah!
