Some friends and I arrived late because we missed a bus. After we walked into the woods we were serenaded by a jug band, who welcomed us into the work party as brothers. The work party shifted from digging out blackberries, an invasive species, to mulching. We set up a bucket brigade, passing buckets of mulch down the trail. The event was with a great nonprofit (the Nature Consortium) who work to restore the Lower Duwamish forest, the largest contiguous forest in Seattle. Awesome!

This was part of an ongoing project to clear blackberry bushes, dig up their roots, mulch, and plant new plants. It was well organized, great fun and it was heartwarming to see how many young people participated. I was glad I could do something hands-on and will continue to participate in this project.

We dug up blackberry root ball in a 1000 square feet of urban forest and sheet mulched 800 square feet in preparation for plantings. We had a jug band entertain us while we worked.
