Hi Everyone! Step it Up 2 for metropolitan Phoenix, hosted at Arizona State University by ASU Clean Energy, went very well, despite our complications. On Thursday, our Memorial Union building caught on fire, and we lost everything we had for the entire event. Despite this, we had a wonderful afternoon, with the following activities and displays:
Why to Eat Local and Organic Food
Bean Bag Toss Trivia
What Are You Voting Ror? Photo Petition
Solar Cooking (with delicious chocolate chip cookies and home-made bread!)
Sustainable Architecture http://www.moranarchitects.com/
AZ Green Party
Central AZ Chapter for Conservation Biology
AZ Sierra Club
EnviroCar (biofuel/hybrid transportation service) http://www.envirocarphx.com/
We had a diverse group of speakers and performers, with our own US Congressman Harry Mitchell stopping by, who spoke about the hopes he has for what congress is working on now, and he even hung out to play a little Bean Bag Toss Trivia! Our other speakers and performers inclueded:
Sandy Bahr, Sierra Club
Jon Fink, Director of the Global Insitute of Sustainability
Larky Hodges, local storyteller
Jon Rudow, acoustic performer
Leah Koestner, acoustic performer
ASU Pitchforks, womens a cappella choir
We had a wonderful group of attendees, including students, community members, professors and their families, as well as our State Representatives Ed Ableser and David Schapira. Be sure to check out the pictures! Thanks Everyone!
And just in case you are wondering, for the "how many miles has this orange traveled game?" Orange B was local, and Orange A was from Australia- 8,600 miles approximately traveled- think of all of the unnessesary fossil fuel burned!
