We had people there from Rideshare, Sierra Club, Community Env. Council, Bulbs Across America, Green Party, Solar Rec, Animal Ethics Group, the cities Vice-Mayor; all giving little talks on what they are doing and handing out light bulbs and information.
It turned out good for such a last minute throw this event together thing.

This was one of the best chances to connect with concern citizens about global warming that this community has had. We shared our local projects and will help each other. Many signed my "Draft Gore" petition for the CA ballot!

It was a little chaotic at first, but then we had some very good speakers, including a city council member. We had some good positive energy for a bit, then it sort of dimished as the topics diverged from Global Warming.
My problem with this and a previous "Step it UP" event is that people are using it for their little political niche issues. There is no chance we can get bipartisan involvement (or even moderate democrats) if we have radical issues in the mix. I think it's important to stick to the Global Warming issues and really try to be inclusive - I think we have a chance to get everyone involved, not just ultra-liberal democrats (which is the impression at the events I've attended).
Thanks,
Dan Holland

A lively gathering of 50 shared various perspectives on global warming. San Luis Obispo Vice Mayor Christine Mulholland told of city’s positive action to conduct energy audits and conserve energy; retrofit city hall lighting and revamp the city’s fleet cars. I listened, with new awareness, to views on climate impact and solutions and saw how the issues are all connected. Renewable energy technology of solar and wind power is here now. But CO2 emissions from coal-fired power plants would negate our best efforts to reduce global warming. Nuclear energy is not as clean as one might think because oil is needed to mine, enrich, and transport uranium. Livestock production demands huge water input, as well as antibiotics, hormones, chemicals, fertilizers and pesticides, polluting our waters and our air. It’s all interconnected and so are we. It’s part of our food chain and the air we breathe. Architecture 2030 is asking the global building community to adopt targets for greenhouse gas reduction of 50% by 2012 and to be carbon-neutral by 2030. I told about my community demonstration-talks on the benefits of compact fluorescent light bulbs - 20 talks in ten months. Many expressed appreciation for Al Gore and Bill McKibben’s efforts with Stepitup07, and this great chance to share what we are doing locally.
