The weather today brought damp chilly wind to New Jersey, but it wasn’t enough to stop residents of Summit and nearby towns from turning out for National Climate Day on November 3.
The Step it Up rally in Summit, organized by resident Anne Marie Treger attracted an enthusiastic crowd of about 60 people including local and state leaders, members of a local Girl Scout troop, The Summit Clean Power Team and The Sierra Club.
Robert Morris (leader of Interweave, a Summit based interfaith group) was the originator of the first Summit NJ Step It Up rally this past April and also kicked off today’s event. Summit Mayor Jordan Glatt spoke of the groundswell of support of green initiatives by Summit residents. Council President Diane Klaif spoke on behalf of Mike Ferguson on his commitment to environmental issues. In addition, Ms. Klaif shared her history of environmental support and current programs. Senator Tom Kean, Assemblymen Eric Munoz and John Bramnick, Senate Candidate Gina Genovese spoke on the importance of using the resources of government to provide leadership and guidance on climate change. In addition, Summit Council members and candidates, Andy Lark, Tom Getzendanner and Marian Glenn also participated. Overall support of today’s event represented non-partisan support of the environment.
