About 50 people from age 1 to 92 attended a rally and demonstration of alternate energy and conservation technologies in downtown Covington, Georgia. The event was organized by the newly formed Newton Climate Action Coalition. We had tables with information and demonstrations on solar thermal, recycling, compact fluorescent light bulbs, and environmental stewardship. A master gardener gave away small trees, a local musician sang, and a local artist helped children decorate takeaway canvas bags. A Toyota Prius and an electric scooter were on display. One of our group, a biology professor at a nearby college, gave the Al Gore climate change presentation in a nearby church twice during the morning. It was a very energizing experience to get out in public and stand up for our beliefs. The most amusing incident came when three global warming "protesters" arrived with posters claiming that climate change is a "hoax." They had seen the press coverage in the local newspapers announcing our event. Having them go to this trouble made us feel like we were forces to be reckoned with. The protesters handed out their literature and then took some of the trees that we were giving away, so they ended up supporting our agenda even if they didn't know it.
